A cream medallion holds a star rosette within a ring of scrolls on this charming rug. Graceful cream vines, small blossoms and pale blue leaves crowd the burgundy field. A handsome cream medallion sits at the center, holding a star rosette within a ring of scrolls. Notched pendants in sage and blue extend from the top and bottom of the central shape. A cream border carries a dense floral scroll in rose, sage and blue. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The pile is low in places across the burgundy ground. The cream border lightens the deep color. At 5'3" by 8'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
The story goes that the Yamut, a tribe of Seljuk Oghuz Turks who settled around Isparta, developed carpet weaving there, and that their rugs were known as “yamut” rugs. Carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages since 1850, and its carpets first reached buyers overseas through the Oriental Carpet Company. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. Here the vines and blossoms are laid out evenly around the center, and the cream medallion and border lighten the burgundy field.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
