About this rug

A pointed medallion in cream and indigo sits at the heart of this charming rug. Worked on a faded red field, scrolling vines carry cream palmettes and small pale green leaves across the center. A handsome pointed medallion sits at the heart, a cream diamond outlined in deep indigo with a small rosette at its core. Cream lobed pieces at each end of the field hold a spray of teal, pink and cream blossoms. The main border runs deep indigo, set with cream and pink flower heads linked by curling stems. Narrow bands in cream and pale green edge the border on both sides. Pale streaks of wear cross the red field, and the weave shows through. Pink and green notes lighten the red. At 5'5" by 8'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

In the first half of 1911 the company workshop in Isparta wove about 12,318 square meters of carpet, more than any other workshop of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. This rug keeps that orderly drawing and the calm read of a town piece, with the medallion-and-corners layout worked in the local rose and indigo. Wear has taken the red down to a dusty level, leaving the cream and pale green accents to carry the pattern as much as the ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
