A dense scatter of cream and rose blossoms fills this charming rug. The faded red field carries a dense scatter of cream and rose blossoms with pale green leaves. A handsome oval medallion sits at the center, its red core holding a floral spray within a cream ring of small gray dots. Large rose blooms and curling vines fill the four corners. The main border is cream, running a scroll of lovely pink roses and gray-green leaves. Thin guard bands in pale red and gray frame the drawing. A few patches have worn low, and the white foundation shows there. The soft red and cream stay tied together across the whole rug. At 5'8" by 9'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
By 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet export company of the day, had workshops in five places, and Isparta was one of them. In the first half of 1911 the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers was in Isparta, where a single agency had about 25,294 square meters woven in homes. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. This rug keeps that orderly floral drawing, with the oval medallion and corner blooms set clearly against the red ground. The cream border and the pale rose accents give the piece a light, open character.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
