Pairs of charming cream flower clusters sit in two columns down the field. Pairs of cream flower clusters and small sprays of leaves sit on the faded red field. The clusters sit in two columns down the field, and no central medallion shows. The main border is cream, carrying a delicate scroll of charcoal hooked vines and small red rosettes. Narrow guard stripes in smoke gray frame the wide cream band on both sides. The pile is worn low across the field, and the foundation shows through in broad pale patches where the faded red has thinned. In a bright sitting area, the faded red stays understated against light floors. At 6'6" by 9'8", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
The Isparta Yarn Factory was founded in 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, with the support of Isparta entrepreneurs. The Isparta carpet factory, a center of the craft for a wide region, kept working until 2008. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. This rug carries its cream in the flower clusters and the border, set on a faded red field. The floral drawing of the border stays clear even where the field has worn thin.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
