Scrolling vines and cream leaf sprays repeat all over this charming rug. On a faded red field, scrolling vines carry pretty cream leaf sprays and small blue rosettes in an all-over repeat. There is no central medallion, only the steady rhythm of blossoms across the ground. The main border is cream, worked with delicate curling leaves and large flower heads in red and blue. A thin blue line runs inside the border, and a narrow tan band edges the outside. The pile is worn low across the whole face, and the weave shows through. The soft rose and blue notes suit a restrained room. At 5'7" by 8'11", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
Isparta was one of only five places where the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet exporter of the day, had workshops of its own in 1909. In the first half of 1911 its Isparta workshop wove more carpet than any of the others, about 12,318 square meters. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. This rug keeps that calm field, with the cream border holding the red ground in check. Wear has taken the red down toward a dusty rose, leaving the blue flowers clear against it.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
