A faded red lozenge fills the center of this lovely rug. A large faded red lozenge fills the center of the field, worked with fine vines and small blossoms in cream and pale blue. At its heart a delicate blue star ring surrounds a cream rosette, and the lozenge ends in points at top and bottom. Cream and pale green corner pieces hold blue boteh shapes, the paisley leaf-drop. The main border is blue, carrying a scroll of red and cream leaves. Narrow guard stripes in pale blue and cream frame the wide band. The pile is low in places along the border, where the foundation shows. The faded red warms the blue. At 6'7" by 10'1", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
Since 1850 carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages, and it was the Oriental Carpet Company that first carried its carpets overseas. In its day the Isparta Carpet Palace was the largest carpet exchange in Turkey. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. Here the floral drawing is fine and closely worked, with vines running through the red lozenge. The cream and pale green around it set the red and blue apart.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
