Two large bouquets of cream roses stand at opposite corners of this lovely rug. Two large bouquets of charming cream roses, small blossoms and olive leaves sit at opposite corners of the faded red field. There is no central medallion, leaving the middle of the rug open. No border or guard stripes frame the design. A full antique wash, no color left at strength, has brought the red and cream to one warm level. The pile is worn low across much of the field, and the foundation shows through. It anchors a sitting area, and the pale bouquets give the red two bright corners. At 6'9" by 10'2", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
By 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet export company of the day, had workshops in five places, and Isparta was one of them. In the first half of 1911 the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers was in Isparta, where a single agency had about 25,294 square meters woven in homes. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. This rug sets cream bouquets against the faded red, and the middle of the field stays open.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
