About this rug

Two floral sprays at opposite corners make this a lovely rug. Over a terracotta field, the rug is mostly open ground, with two floral sprays set at opposite corners. Each spray grows from a small vase, sending graceful cream blossoms and dark stems across the plain center. There is no medallion and no main border to frame the drawing. Wear has flattened the pile over most of the field, and the foundation shows through in pale patches. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The two floral sprays add detail to the warm, open ground of this rug. At 6'11" by 10'2", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Under the name “Isparta quality” the carpets of Isparta were famous in the early years of the Turkish Republic. In its day the Isparta Carpet Palace was the largest carpet exchange in Turkey. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. This rug shares that softer palette, working cream and warm gray against the terracotta rather than deep reds. Rather than the orderly town drawing, the field stays almost bare, with floral sprays placed only at two corners.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
