A large blue medallion sits on the terracotta field of this lovely rug. Set in a terracotta field, a large blue medallion holds a cream center with a small blue rosette. Splendid blue diamond pendants extend from the top and bottom of the central shape across the open ground. Cream spandrels fill the four corners with pretty gray scrolling vines and small flower heads. The main border runs blue, carrying rose scrolls and small florets along its length. Narrow guard stripes in gray and beige frame the wide border on both sides. A light antique wash softened the colors without reaching the drawing. Low spots in the terracotta ground let the white foundation show through. Blue and terracotta share the surface without competing for attention. At 7'1" by 10'11", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
In 1943 the Isparta carpet factory passed to the state-owned Sumerbank, which backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug keeps that orderly drawing, with the medallion and corners set clearly against the open ground. The terracotta field and blue border show the soft palette at work.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
