A charming rounded medallion of blossoms sits at the center of a faded red field. Worked on a faded red field, dainty sprays of cream flowers and leaves surround a rounded medallion of blossoms at the center. A vase of flowers stands at each corner of the field. A cream main border carries graceful scrolling vines, a square key pattern and round red cartouches. Narrow guard stripes in wine red and brown edge this broad band. The pile is worn low across much of the field, and the foundation shows in pale lines and patches. The low pile and the cream sprays keep the red calm in a sitting area. At 7'1" by 10'2", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
The story goes that the Yamut, a tribe of Seljuk Oghuz Turks who settled around Isparta, developed carpet weaving there, and that their rugs were known as “yamut” rugs. Carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages since 1850, and its carpets first reached buyers overseas through the Oriental Carpet Company. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug sets its cream flowers well apart on the red, around one medallion.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
