About this rug

Scrolling vines and small rosettes repeat throughout this charming rug. Across a rust field, scrolling vines and small rosettes repeat in an all-over plan with no central medallion. Gray brown lines trace the floral lattice, while touches of pale blue and cream fill the spaces between the motifs. The main border runs cream, carrying a chain of lovely stylized blossoms and leaves in soft blue and rust. Thin charcoal bands frame the wide light strip on either side. The antique wash was light; it eased the colors and kept the floral lines legible. The pile is low in places over the face. The faded rust ground sits warm against the cream frame. At 5'1" by 8'4", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

In the first half of 1911 the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers was in Isparta, where a single agency had about 25,294 square meters woven in homes. Under the name “Isparta quality” the carpets of Isparta were famous in the early years of the Turkish Republic. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This piece shows a structured vine pattern in rust and pale blue. The cream border frames the busy center without heavy contrast.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
