This charming rug has a large round medallion in teal and cream. A rust field opens wide around a large round medallion worked in teal and cream. Its small rust core is ringed by graceful floral scrolls, with pointed pendants at the top and bottom. Cream spandrels fill the four corners, each holding lovely curling floral sprays. A wide border in cream and teal carries a chain of rust and cream blossoms, with narrow guard stripes of cream and brown. Wear shows across the field, where flecks of the white foundation come through. It grounds a reading chair, the cool teal border balancing the warm rust center. At 4'11" by 8'2", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
A single agency in Isparta had about 25,294 square meters of carpet woven in homes in the first half of 1911, the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug shares that orderly drawing, with the medallion set clearly against the open ground. Rather than the rose often seen in Isparta rugs, this piece uses a warmer rust alongside chalky teal and cream.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
