About this rug

A charming layered lozenge medallion with a teal core sits at the heart of the deep red field. The deep red field holds scrolling vines, palmettes and flower heads in cream, sage and blue. A central medallion sits at the heart, a layered lozenge with a navy scalloped ring, a cream inner band and a teal core, with lobed pendants reaching up and down. Splendid cream spandrels occupy the four corners, carrying dense vine work in sage and blue. The wide border is navy, set with tan palmettes and star-shaped rosettes in sage and red. A sage guard band patterned in brown and black edges the field on either side. The red field has worn down over most of its area, and the bare weave shows through in places. Cream corners lift the deep red field, giving the sitting area a formal look. At 6'1" by 9'2", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

UNESCO lists the historic bazaar of Tabriz as World Heritage and calls it one of the most important commercial centers on the Silk Road. Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. The city workshop tradition of Tabriz, in northwestern Persia, shows in the discipline of the drawing. Centered medallions, borders that turn cleanly at the corners and vine scrolls planned in full before weaving began are the marks of Tabriz work. This rug keeps that centered medallion and the clean corner turns, with the vine work laid out symmetrically across the field. Rather than the ivory, gray beige and pale blue grounds these workshops also used, this rug holds its pattern on a warmer red ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
