About this rug

A charming vine of palmettes in red and cream sits in the wide navy main border. Fine scrolling vines hung with cream and olive leaves and blue and rose blossoms spread over a deep red field. At the center sits a splendid navy pointed medallion with a cream and rose rosette core, a flower seen from above. Small navy and cream lozenges sit above and below it. The four corners are filled with beautiful steel blue spandrels. The wide navy main border carries a vine of palmettes in red and cream. Cream guard stripes of tiny crosses edge it on both sides, each backed by a steel blue band. No wear shows, and the colors hold their full strength. It suits a room that wants one clear focal point, with the warm red set against the cool blue. At 7' by 10'3", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. Arak in central Persia was once known as Sultanabad, and its weaving district was among the largest in the country. The surrounding villages each sold under their own names. Their shared character is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. This rug is one of the medallion designs from the district, with a single centered motif rather than a repeating field. The florals of the region are still here, carried on vines that fill the space around the medallion, while the palette is led by red, navy and blue.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
