Navy boteh stand in ranks across this amazing deep red rug. Spaced wide apart, navy boteh march in ranks across a field of deep red, each with a stem and a tan tip. The red shows between them as open ground, crossed by faint lighter bands that run side to side. The plan is all-over: the ranks run to the border without a break, with no medallion or corner piece. A beautiful cream border holds small stick-legged animals, dotted lozenges and plant sprigs in long hexagonal cartouches, set between pink-tan bands of crosses and diamonds. Dainty navy zigzag vines with small pink flowers run beside it, twisted guard stripes edge each band, and a solid red outer band closes the frame. It pairs well with a cream or navy sofa, since both colors return in the border. At 6'9" by 10'9", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. Arak, known historically as Sultanabad, sits in central Persia and anchored one of its biggest weaving districts. Each village sent rugs to market under its own name, and what ties them together is a floral field covering the whole rug, worked in soft, restrained colors. This rug opens that plan up: boteh stand in wide ranks instead of a crowded flower field, so the deep red ground shows between them. Navy, cream and tan sit against the red, and the faint lighter bands across the field add a little movement.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
