About this rug

Charming pointed pendants rise above and below the near-black star medallion. The deep red field holds delicate scrolling vines in gold and cream, with small steel blue blossoms between them. At the center, a near-black star medallion carries a gold and cream core, with pointed pendants above and below. Handsome steel blue spandrels fill the four corners, with fine red vine lines running through them and a small brown piece in each angle. The main border has a near-black ground, set with large palmettes and rosettes in red, pink, gold, cream and teal. Narrow guard stripes in steel blue, carrying small pink flowers, run on either side. Pile is full over the whole face. It suits a room that wants warmth, and the steel blue corners cool the heavy red. At 6'9" by 11'1", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Arak in central Persia, known historically as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, and the shared character is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. This piece keeps the floral drawing in its scrolling vines and palmettes, gathered around a central medallion. The steel blue spandrels and near-black border frame the red field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
