About this rug

Tiny boteh in close rows spread over the deep red field of this delightful rug. Tiny boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, spread over the deep red field in close rows, picked out in navy and pink so the surface becomes a fine, steady texture. Nothing interrupts the repeat: it has no medallion, and it runs edge to edge inside a broad outer band of solid red. Cream makes up the gorgeous main border, which carries small angular animals, leaf sprigs and dotted lozenges in hexagonal cartouches between navy bands of flowers. Dotted red guard stripes and a gold zigzag band frame the stack on both sides. Slow shifts of deeper red drift across the field. It suits a living space that wants warmth without a loud center, with the deep red under the furniture and the cream border brightening the edges. At 7'4" by 9'11", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Known historically as Sultanabad, Arak in central Persia was the center of one of the country’s largest weaving districts. Surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, with an all-over floral field and a restrained palette as the shared character. Here the all-over idea holds, but flowers give way to tiny boteh, and the palette stays restrained, with deep red, navy, cream and gold. Small animals in the cream border loosen things up, giving the tightly packed field a livelier frame.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
