About this rug

Charming pink and tan boteh repeat across the deep red field. Worked on a deep red field, rows of small boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, repeat in pink and tan with fine outlines across the whole ground. A gorgeous cream diamond medallion sits at the center, filled with angular figures in red, burgundy, green and black. Cream triangles close the field corners, set with the same angular figures. The main border is cream, carrying angular figures and small leaves in red, burgundy, blue and green. Guard stripes of olive with pink diamonds, blue with a red twist, and plain red edge the border on both sides. White specks show where the pile is low, scattered across the field and the borders. It brings a warm red ground to a room, while the cream medallion and border give the eye a pale place to rest. At 6'11" by 10'4", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Arak in central Persia, once known as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The villages around it sold under their own names, and what they share is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. This rug keeps the all-over repeat in its field of small boteh shapes. The palette stays within red, cream, olive and blue, with a diamond at the center and cream triangles in the corners.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
