About this rug

A cream lobed medallion with a flower core makes this a wonderful rug. At the center of a deep red field sits a cream lobed medallion with a flower core, wreathed by charming flowering branches that curve out to pendants above and below. Handsome coral red corner pieces carry flowering sprigs, and a small woven inscription sits at the top of the field. The navy main border carries cream rosettes, each a flower seen from above, alternating with palmettes. Rust bands dotted with small flowers frame the border on both sides, inside a thin red edge. The pile is full from edge to edge. It anchors a room with strong red and navy, while the cream medallion and the orange bands keep it bright. At 7'6" by 10'8", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. Arak in central Persia, known historically as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. Its villages sold under their own names, and the shared character is a floral field and a restrained palette. This rug is one of the medallion designs from the district, with a single centered motif instead of a repeating field. The floral drawing stays true to type, in flowering branches that fill the red. The palette does not: deep red, navy and rust at full strength are bolder than many rugs from the district.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
