About this rug

Delightful animals and trees sit between linked hexagons in the wide cream main border. A burgundy red field carries rows of tiny boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, in navy, rose and olive. The field has neither medallion nor corner pieces, so the rows run clear to the border. The wide cream main border is worked with small animals and trees between linked hexagons. Navy guard bands of flower heads and diamonds and a thin serrated strip in cream and gray blue sit between the border and the field. Lighter patches of red cloud the upper part of the field. It anchors a room with a steady red, while the cream border keeps the edges light. At 7'2" by 10'6", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

By 1913 Arak, then called Sultanabad, had become the center of a great rug industry controlled by Europeans and Americans. Its dyes were said to have perhaps the most extensive color scheme in Persia. Arak in central Persia, once known as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. Villages around it supplied the market under their own names. The district is known for an all-over field worked in a restrained palette. Both carry over here, with rows of boteh in place of florals and a short run of colors led by burgundy, navy and cream. The border animals add the one lively detail to an otherwise restrained design.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
