About this rug

On this charming rug, small hooked sprays in deep red, brown and cream cover the burgundy field. Burgundy carries the field, covered in small hooked sprays in deep red, brown and cream. A large diamond fills the center, with a cream lozenge at its heart holding a near-black core. Handsome cream spandrels fill the four corners, with pink blocks and small red figures, and near-black bands run between them and the diamond. The main border is cream, set with a chain of hexagons in red, green and pink. Narrow guard stripes of tan with small X marks and of navy with red running motifs sit on both sides. The pile is low in places, with pale specks scattered across the field and borders. The dense drawing keeps the red and cream together against the near-black bands. At 7'2" by 9'11", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, was the capital of Media and later the summer residence of the Achaemenid kings. The Mongols destroyed Hamedan about 1220 and Timur sacked it in 1386, and the city was partly restored in the 17th century. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. This area rug keeps the large central diamond and the cream corner pieces. Along the edge, a chain of red, green and pink hexagons runs on a cream band, with narrow tan and navy stripes on either side.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
