Ivory guls sit five across and seven down on this charming rug. Five across and seven down, ivory guls sit in a burgundy red field, each filled with salmon and slate blue, with a small cross figure in every gap between them. The main border carries delicate ivory and dark red octagonal rosettes ringed with small branching figures. Narrow guard stripes of ivory diamonds and navy leaf shapes run on both sides. The field keeps a full pile and a strong crimson red, though the top end band is worn lower and its blue has softened. It anchors a sofa and chairs in warm red and ivory, and the navy stripes give the red a cooler edge. At 6'8" by 8'10", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A Turkmen storage bag, hung from the trellis walls of the tent, held the family’s belongings and worked something like a portable wardrobe. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. It sounds austere, and it is the opposite. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. On this Torkaman rug it comes from the salmon and slate blue inside the ivory guls, and from the navy guard stripes that cool the red. The grid itself is kept exactly, five guls across and seven down, with a smaller cross figure filling each gap.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
