This delightful rug holds trees, vases and flowering plants in a grid of compartments. On a burgundy field, a grid of compartments holds trees, vases and flowering plants in deep red, navy and cream. No central medallion interrupts the grid, which runs in eight rows of five squares. The handsome main border is deep red, carrying lovely cream and navy leaf shapes and small flowers. Narrow guard stripes of cream with a small navy zigzag run along both sides. The pile is full across the panels and every border band. It grounds a sitting area, and the navy squares cool the warmth of the red. At 6'11" by 10'2", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Bakhtiari rugs
In 1909 Bakhtiari tribesmen under the chief Sardar Assad captured Tehran in a successful campaign for constitutional reform. Bakhtiari rugs were made under the patronage of the tribe in certain villages southwest of Isfahan. The garden panel is the signature of Bakhtiari weaving, which comes from the Zagros mountains of western Persia. Bakhtiari weavers moved their herds twice a year. This rug keeps the strict grid of compartments, each square holding a tree, a vase or a flowering plant. Navy, deep red and cream alternate from square to square across the whole field.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
