About this rug

A stylized tree, flower or cross sits in each compartment of this charming rug. Burgundy leads the field, shared with brick red and cream compartments in a grid, each holding a stylized tree, flower or cross in dark green, rust and orange. No single medallion anchors the design, as the garden panel layout fills the entire ground with its repeating squares. Dark green-black lines divide the compartments all the way to the edge, leaving no room for corner spandrels. A beautiful tan main border displays a chain of brown, rust and near-black linked shapes with small navy and orange blossoms. Narrow guard stripes in dark red with small cream flowers flank it on both sides. White specks and low spots show across the field, mostly in the middle rows, where the foundation comes through. It grounds a seating area, the cream squares easing the depth of the red ground. At 7'0" by 9'4", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Bakhtiari rugs

The Bakhtiari move their flocks 150 miles each year between winter pastures in the plains and summer pastures in the mountains. Bakhtiari rugs were made under the patronage of the tribe in certain villages southwest of Isfahan. The garden panel is the signature of Bakhtiari weaving, which comes from the Zagros mountains of western Persia. A grid of compartments divides the field, and each one holds its own tree, vase or flowering plant. Here the rows repeat across the field, and the grounds alternate between red and cream, with a plain tan border around the grid.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
