About this rug

On this lovely rug, three joined diamond medallions run down the center. Worked on a burgundy field, small geometric sprays and hooked vines in cream, blue and green fill the open space. Three joined diamond medallions run down the center, the top and bottom ones on a near-black ground and the middle one on cream, each with a stepped core. Gorgeous near-black spandrels sit in all four corners, each holding one diamond ringed in cream. A deep red border runs around the field, set with a wavy cream line and small angular marks. Thin guard stripes of cream dots and zigzags sit on both sides. Full pile covers the field and each border band. It suits a room with warm wood tones, where the deep red and scattered cream notes stay gentle. At 6'3" by 10'5", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Shiraz rugs

UNESCO records that the women of Fars design, choose the colors and weave without a cartoon, so that no weaver makes two carpets of the same design. In Fars the men shear the sheep in spring or autumn and build the loom, a horizontal frame placed on the ground, while the women spin the yarn. Shiraz is the market city of Fars province in southern Persia, and the rugs sold under its name came from the tribal and village weavers of the surrounding country. The drawing is geometric and often asymmetric. No two are laid out quite alike. This rug keeps that geometric drawing and the scattered small motifs across the burgundy ground. The three linked diamonds give the center a clear vertical line, and a diamond sits in each corner.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
