About this rug

Rows of octagonal guls in cream, teal and orange sit in the deep red field of this remarkable rug. Set in a deep red field, rows of octagonal guls repeat in cream, teal and orange. The gul is the tribal emblem, and here each one holds a quartered cross with small hooked leaves. There are no corner spandrels, as the pattern runs straight to the edge of the field. A gorgeous burgundy main border carries geometric rosettes and stepped motifs in cream and dark brown. Narrow guard stripes with a cream and black running hook pattern frame the border on both sides. The pile is full across the face and in the borders. It suits a room that needs a strong red anchor without a busy central drawing. At 6'3" by 8'10", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ghoochan rugs

Most people of Ghoochan descend from a tribe of Za’faranlu Kurds whom Shah Abbas I resettled there in the 17th century. They guarded the frontier, and in return lived under their own hereditary leader, exempt from all tribute. In the north of Khorasan in eastern Persia, close to the Turkmen country, Ghoochan shows that closeness in its weaving. Its rugs carry the repeating geometric figures of the northeast, not the curves of the Persian center, in madder red and dark blue. This rug keeps that repeating geometry in its rows of guls and the stepped motifs in the border. Here the dark notes are brown and teal rather than dark blue, set against the red ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
