About this rug

With a large stepped medallion at the center, ringed in navy, this is a remarkable rug. On a deep red field, wide areas of cream carry small hooked motifs in brown and red. A large stepped medallion sits at the center, ringed in navy, with a cream cross and leaf forms at its core and stepped pendants at top and bottom. Handsome red corner pieces with notched edges and touches of blue close the four corners. The main border runs navy, set with bold geometric shapes in red, brown and camel. A guard stripe of small red and blue rosettes on a cream ground runs inside the navy band. The pile is full across the face and borders. The strong red and navy contrast stands out on wood floors. At 6'8" by 7'7", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Gorevan rugs

The carpets of the Heriz district were sold in the West under village names: Serapi for those in light, rather bright colors, and Gorevan for the darker ones. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, found Gorevans large and nearly square, and often larger than the carpets of Mashhad or Tabriz. Gorevan is a village in the Heriz district of northwestern Persia. It weaves in the same language as its better-known neighbor: big angular medallions, terracotta and copper against ivory, spandrels squared off at the corners. This rug keeps that angular language, with a sharp stepped outline around the medallion and square-cut corner pieces. Its deep red ground sits beside wide cream areas, with navy in the medallion and the border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
