About this rug

A cream diamond medallion makes this a charming rug. The red field stays open around the center, with no scattered motifs. A cream diamond medallion holds a floral core, with small pendants at the two ends. Beautiful cream spandrels occupy the four corners, holding graceful scrolling vines and touches of turquoise. The main border runs blue, carrying geometric motifs in cream, pink and green, with thin guard stripes beside it. A light antique wash has eased the red, though the drawing reads clearly. The pile runs low in places across the red. The red ground stays gentle against the blue frame. At 5'8" by 8'3", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

For about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520, Manisa was governed by a young prince, the future Suleiman the Magnificent. The carpets of Kula, in Manisa province, first appear in the 17th century, and the town made its best pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. These pieces were made for houses, not for export, so the sizes are practical and the drawing is unfussy. This piece retains that blend, with a diamond medallion enclosing loose floral vines. The red field and blue border stay distinct against the cream pattern.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
