About this rug

Scattered floral sprays surround a central figure on this lovely rug. Over a red field, scattered charming floral sprays in cream, slate blue and tan surround a central figure. A large lobed medallion sits at the center, with pendants at the top and bottom. The splendid main border runs slate blue, carrying cream and tan rosettes. The pile is worn low across the field, and the foundation shows. The slate blue and red meet in this rug. At 5'6" by 9'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

The future Suleiman the Magnificent governed Manisa as a young prince for about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520. By April 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers had set up agencies in the carpet towns of western Anatolia, among them Manisa, Gordes, Demirci and Kula. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. This piece keeps that meeting, with a lobed central medallion set against scattered floral sprays in the field. The red ground and slate blue border hold the drawing together.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
