A long scalloped panel holds a cream diamond medallion on this charming rug. Cream and sage vines with small teal leaves trail across a faded rose red field shaped into a long scalloped panel. The central medallion is a cream diamond with a small rose lozenge at its core. A pale sage ground surrounds the panel, scattered with delicate loose floral sprays in rose and brown. The main border is pale sage, carrying spaced rosettes and blossoms in red and teal, with narrow bands of brown and red inside it. The pile is low in places, and the red reads paler where the weave shows through. The worn red ground lets the soft rose and teal notes breathe. At 5'1" by 8'11", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Manisa rugs
For about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520, Manisa was governed by a young prince, the future Suleiman the Magnificent. The carpets of Kula, in Manisa province, first appear in the 17th century, and the town made its best pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. A bold lobed shape at the center and loose flowers in the border carry that blend. The drawing stays unfussy, and the warm palette leans into cream and dusty rose rather than deep saturation.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
