About this rug

Lovely red and cream palmettes fill the navy main border. Cream and blue vines scroll through a deep red field, gathering around a handsome rounded navy medallion with a gold star at its core. Beautiful light blue spandrels take the four corners, with more scrollwork and a small brown patch at each outer tip. Its main border is navy, carrying red and cream palmettes, each one a fan of petals standing for success, linked by curling stems. Light blue bands of small red flowers and narrow brown stripes sit beside it, and a twisted navy and cream guard stripe runs around the field’s edge. The rich red and navy ground fills a big room, while light blue corners and cream scrollwork lift it. At 7'1" by 10', it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mahal rugs

Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. In 1913 the rugs of its district sold under three names: Sultanabad, Savalan, after a range of mountains to the north, and Mahal. Woven in the villages around Arak in central Persia, Mahal rugs were large and open from the start. Typically that means a wide field, generous spacing between the motifs and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. This one differs in two ways. The red and navy run strong, and the cream and blue scrollwork covers the field closely instead of leaving it open. The medallion and the light blue corners still give the eye places to rest, so it reads clearly across a big room.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
