On this wonderful rug, steel blue corner pieces carrying blossoms curve into the four corners. At the center, a handsome near-black diamond medallion holds a cream rosette on a deep red field. Scattered sprays of gold and pink flowers fill the open space around it. Steel blue corner pieces curve into the four corners, each carrying more blossoms. The main border is near-black, set with pink flower heads, gold leaves and red palmettes. Narrow guard stripes in gold and steel blue frame the border on both sides. Full pile covers the field and the border. Steel blue corners cool the red, giving this large room a warm base. At 7'9" by 11'7", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
By 1913 Arak, then called Sultanabad, had become the center of a great rug industry controlled by Europeans and Americans. Its dyes were said to have perhaps the most extensive color scheme in Persia. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the beginning. With a design that is not crowded, a Mahal reads calm across a big room. This rug has a wide field, with flower sprays spaced freely across the red ground. Steel blue in the corners and gold in the border add cooler and lighter notes beside the red.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
