About this rug

This amazing rug has a navy diamond medallion resting in the middle of the deep red field. A navy diamond medallion rests in the middle of a deep red field, an ivory and sky blue rosette at its heart. Lovely ivory flower sprays curl out around it on tan vines. Navy pendants reach above and below, and beautiful navy corner pieces, each holding an ivory lobed cartouche, close the field. The wide navy main border carries oval cartouches in red, gold and ivory on a scrolling red vine. Ivory guard stripes of small flowers and a pale blue band of palmettes sit on both sides of it. Wear is light, and the pile still stands thick to the very edge of the border. It anchors a long room: the red is the warm note and the navy gives it weight. At 7'7" by 11'8", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

The story goes that the three Wise Men of the East set out from Kashan to follow the Star of Bethlehem. In the 1600s, when Poland and Persia had close relations, the Polish nobility ordered many gold-threaded rugs from Kashan. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug, with a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. This one follows that plan closely, with a diamond medallion, pendants, navy corner pieces and a field full of vine scrolls and small flowers. The red is the saturated kind that old Kashans hold. These were made as the best rug in a house, and the clear medallion and the closely worked border show that intent.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
