About this rug

A lobed near-black medallion with a cream star core sits at the center of this remarkable rug. Lovely curling vines, palmettes and flower heads in cream, steel blue and pink crowd the deep red field. A lobed near-black medallion sits at the center, its core a cream star holding a steel blue rosette. Splendid near-black spandrels edged in cream fill the four corners, carrying the same scrolling vine and blossom. Its main border is near-black, with pink and cream palmettes on curling stems, and cream and pale blue guard stripes run along both sides. The pile is full throughout. It suits a room that wants one warm, formal anchor, the near-black frame steadying the red. At 7'10" by 11'5", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. The formal Persian rug is most closely tied to the central Persian city of Kashan: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Saturated madder reds are what old Kashans are known for. Here the deep red field sits inside a near-black border and corners, with cream and steel blue picking out the leaves.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
