The ivory lobes cradling a teal blue star make this a remarkable rug. Through the deep red field wind fine vines hung with palmettes and blossoms in cream and blue, with dainty walnut brown leaves between them. A navy diamond medallion holds the middle, its ivory lobes cradling a teal blue star. Navy corner pieces with ivory tips fill each corner. Navy is the ground of the main border, where lovely cream palmettes sit on red scrolling vines. A teal blue band and cream stripes flank it on both sides. Tiny pale flecks scattered over the field and navy border mark where the weave shows. It suits a room built around deep red and navy, and the ivory lobes and teal star give the center a bright note. At 8'2" by 11'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Nothing is known of Kashan carpets from the 1600s through the 1800s; then, at the dawn of the 20th century, a large commercial production arose there. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug, with a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. These rugs were made as the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. This one stays close to that plan, with the red still saturated and a fine vine across the whole field. The teal blue star and band add a cooler note to the red and navy.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
