A delightful dark burgundy medallion is closed by short pendants at top and bottom. Palmette fans, tendrils and small blooms in cream and soft blue cover a deep red field. At the middle sits a dark burgundy medallion, almost black at a glance, closed by short pendants at top and bottom. Its pale pink core holds a rosette, a bloom viewed from above. Beautiful dark burgundy spandrels fill the corners, each with a small pale pink panel. A broad main border on the same dark ground runs a scrolling vine with graceful blue palmettes and pink flower heads. A light blue guard of cream scrolls and a cream stripe of small blossoms edge it. A short, close pile keeps every petal sharp. It brings a deep, layered red to the room. At 7'10" by 10'10", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
The story goes that the three Wise Men of the East set out from Kashan to follow the Star of Bethlehem. Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug, with a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Here the dark medallion, the corner spandrels and the vine are all in place. Old Kashans hold saturated madder reds, and the red of this field is a good example. These rugs were made as the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. That intent shows in the wide border and the close vine.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
