The dark brown medallion looks charming in the middle of the deep red field. Over a deep red field, delicate scrolling vines carry steel blue blossoms, cream flower heads and small green leaves. A dark brown medallion rests in the middle, holding a cream rosette and red petals within its lobed outline, with a pointed pendant above and below. Dark brown spandrels edged in cream fill each field corner, crowded with red and pink blossoms and curling stems. The main border is dark brown, set with beautiful red and cream cartouches linked by scrolling stems. Tan and red guard stripes, one with a small zigzag line, frame the wide band. The pile is low in patches across the field and along the left border. It anchors a sitting area, the dark brown frame holding the bright red field in check. At 7'8" by 11'7", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

About Kashan rugs
Nothing is known of Kashan carpets from the 1600s through the 1800s; then, at the dawn of the 20th century, a large commercial production arose there. UNESCO lists the carpet weaving of Kashan as living heritage, noting that almost one in three residents works in carpet making and that most of the makers are women. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug, with a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Old Kashans are known for their saturated madder reds. This piece has the central medallion and the corner spandrels, with a red that still reads strong across the field. Fine vines with blue blossoms fill the open red.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
