About this rug

The burgundy red field looks lovely with its navy, pale blue and cream vines. Thick with charming curling vines, palmettes and small rosettes in navy, pale blue and cream, the burgundy red field gathers around a stepped lozenge medallion. The medallion is navy at the edge and cream inside, with a pale blue core around a red rosette. Beautiful navy pendants lead off its two ends, and cream and pale blue corner pieces sit in the navy spandrels. The navy border repeats the vines at a larger scale, with palmettes and blue gray rosettes. A guard of small red and blue flowers on cream and a pale blue saw-tooth stripe close the edge. Flecking shows across the field where the foundation comes through. It brings a classic red and navy scheme into a room, with pale blue touches that keep it light. At 8'1" by 11'4", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

Costly silk carpets with figure designs, such as the hunting carpet now in Vienna, were probably woven in Kashan, the silk center of Persia. It was long the custom to bring raw silk from other places to Kashan to be spun and dyed there. Kashan is the central Persian city most closely tied to the formal Persian rug. This one follows the plan: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. These were made as the best rug in a house, and the fine work in the border carries that intent. The pale blue brightens the medallion and corners more than the red and navy many Kashan rugs show.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
