About this rug

A charming star medallion in pale blue, cream and mauve sits on a burgundy field. At the center, a star medallion in pale blue, cream and mauve sits on a burgundy field crowded with scrolling vines, palmettes and small blossoms. A gorgeous teardrop pendant in pale blue and pink, with curling horns, sits above and below it. Splendid corner spandrels in mauve and coral hold cream floral forms with pale blue leaves. A mauve ground carries the broad border’s cream cartouches, palmettes and blue and crimson red leaves. Cream guard stripes with small red and black leaves run on both sides, and a narrow red and blue stripe edges the field. The pile is low in places across the field, and white flecks show where the foundation comes through. In a large room, the pale blue notes cool the red ground. At 7'10" by 10'7", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mashhad rugs

Imam Riza, the eighth Shi’ite imam, is buried at Mashhad, and the city is a great destination of pilgrims. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, traced the variety of Khorasan patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs those pilgrims brought from other provinces. Mashhad is the great weaving city of Khorasan in northeastern Persia, and it specialized in large formats. Its rugs show deep madder red grounds, a single dominant medallion, and borders wide enough to hold their own at scale. This rug has that single medallion on its burgundy ground, inside a broad border. Pale blue and coral notes in the center and corners set off the red, and cream outlines the figures in the border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
