Charming gold and cream lattice quarter-medallions sit in the four corners. Worked on a burgundy field, delicate curling vines, palmettes and flower heads in cream, gold and steel blue spread from the center. A splendid many-pointed round medallion anchors the middle, its core blue with a small red rosette, with lamp-shaped pendants above and below. Gold and cream lattice quarter-medallions fill the four corners. The main border holds gold palmettes and rosettes on a near-black ground, linked by a cream vine. Steel blue guard stripes with red and pink flowers, plus a cream stripe with a diagonal pattern, frame the border. Thin patches and white specks show in the field, mostly left of center. The dense drawing ties the burgundy field to the near-black border in one heavy frame. At 8'6" by 11'8", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mashhad rugs
Imam Riza, the eighth Shi’ite imam, is buried at Mashhad, and the city is a great destination of pilgrims. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, traced the variety of Khorasan patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs those pilgrims brought from other provinces. Mashhad is the great weaving city of Khorasan in northeastern Persia. Its rugs show deep madder red grounds, a single dominant medallion, and borders wide enough to hold their own at scale. This rug has one round medallion and a broad border around the whole field. Gold and cream stand out against the burgundy.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
