About this rug

Against this burgundy field, the lobed medallion in dark navy is charming. Pretty scrolling vines, palmettes and small blossoms in ivory, olive, steel blue and rose fill the burgundy field around a lobed medallion in dark navy. Its heart is terracotta with a small blue rosette, and smaller navy pendants sit above and below it. The four corner pieces are navy too, each holding a big ornament in antique gold and tan. The wide navy main border carries pink, ivory and blue flowers between terracotta guard bands. Light wear has softened the burgundy in places and given it a settled look. The contrast is strong without being harsh: a dark frame, a deep burgundy center and pale flowers to carry the eye. It pairs well with dark wood floors, cream walls and brass lighting. At 9'10" by 12', it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mashhad rugs

In 1877 the Qajar shah gave London’s South Kensington Museum 14 carpets chosen by his ministers to represent the best being woven, one of them made in Mashhad. Mashhad is the great weaving city of Khorasan in northeastern Persia, and it specialized in large formats. This rug shows why. The ground is a dark burgundy rather than a bright red. A single dominant medallion holds the center, and the navy border is wide enough to hold its own across a big room. Rather than the plainest version, it fills the field with small flowers and palmettes, and the dark corner pieces carry large gold and tan ornaments. A genuinely room-sized rug with a dark ground like this one is often a Mashhad.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
