About this rug

Botehs in tight lines across this deep burgundy field are charming. Rows of botehs run in tight lines across a deep burgundy field, each one outlined in cream and filled with navy, blue and green. Pink blossoms and tiny flowers are packed between them. The repeat runs straight to the border, with no medallion to interrupt it. A gorgeous near-black navy main border carries cream-edged paisleys, palmettes and red and rose flower heads, with cream lozenges set at intervals along the long sides. Wide salmon-cream guards of vine and small red flowers frame both sides, with slim striped guards beyond them. A few tiny worn flecks show the foundation, nothing you notice from standing height. Deep red and dark navy suit leather, brass and dark wood, and the even repeat stays calm in a busy room. At 9'5" by 12'8", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Birjand rugs

Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan was a larger province that also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. In South Khorasan in eastern Persia, Birjand is the main weaving town, and its rugs are finer and more formal than most village work. This one keeps to the region on the points that count: curved lines throughout and a palette of madder red and deep blue with ivory in the details. The drawing is so dense that every boteh stays legible even at small scale. Where it departs is the plan. Instead of the floral lattice or centered medallion you might expect, the field is given over to rows of boteh, which stay formal because the rows are so even.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
