About this rug

The ivory palmettes and scrolling vines set the tone for this lovely rug. Ivory palmettes, large rosettes and scrolling vines cover the field, with dainty pale blue flowers surfacing among them, and the pile is low in places across it. The vines run right up to the guard stripe, so no medallion or corner pieces break the repeat. The wide main border sets beige palmette flowers, blue star flowers and small burgundy blossoms on a ground of pale blue green, between beige guard stripes. The border has softened further than the field and mottles gently, and a scatter of pale flecks marks thin spots in the field. Pale blue lightens the burgundy, and the rug warms pale walls and oak floors. At 8'10" by 12'4", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Yazd rugs

Yazd was at one time noted for its silk rugs, and for felts so heavy they could hardly be moved, some of them two inches thick. Yazd sits on the edge of the central Persian desert and has been a textile city for centuries. Its rugs borrow the medallion and vine drawing of Kerman to the south, worked in a slightly cooler palette. The weaving is dense enough to hold fine detail. This one is the all-over type. The pattern repeats across the whole field with no central medallion, and the pale blue flowers and the blue green border supply the cooler note. Yazd pieces turn up less often than their neighbors, simply because fewer were made.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
