The dark aubergine field of this rug is charming. A dark aubergine field, cut as a lobed hexagon, is packed edge to edge with a tight herati repeat in rose and soft blue. It surrounds a tiny ivory diamond medallion that anchors the center almost secretly. Washed ivory and beige corner areas soften the angles of the field, and the splendid red main border strings ivory diamond rosettes with blue accents between patterned guard bands. A fine patina lies over the whole surface. The small-scale pattern and the darkened ground make this an extraordinarily forgiving everyday rug. It fits a traditional room and warms up a newer, more minimal one. At 8'2" by 12'5", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the beginning. The result is a wide field, plenty of space between the motifs, and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. This rug keeps the Mahal scale but fills its field with the herati, the leaf-and-rosette repeat shared across much of central Persia. The ground has darkened to aubergine where most of the region’s rugs are navy or red. The lobed field with pale corners is the classic Arak-district plan. The small central diamond is typical, a medallion in name only, there to mark the middle rather than command it.

Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
