A near-black diamond medallion makes a wonderful contrast with the deep red field. At the center, a near-black diamond medallion with a cream core sits on a deep red field crowded with scrolling vines and palmettes. Pendants extend from the top and bottom of the central shape into the floral scrolls. Splendid cream spandrels in the four corners hold curling leaves and blossoms in rose and gray. The main border runs near-black, carrying red flower heads with teal and blue leaves in a repeating chain. Narrow guard stripes in teal and tan frame this dark band on both sides. A few low patches show in the red field, and the borders keep full pile. In a large room, the dark medallion holds its place against the bright red surround. At 9'8" by 13'1", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
By 1913 Arak, then called Sultanabad, had become the center of a great rug industry controlled by Europeans and Americans. Its dyes were said to have perhaps the most extensive color scheme in Persia. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the start. That means a wide field, generous spacing between the motifs, and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. Here the vines spread wide around the medallion, and the dark border sets off the lighter accents. The red field is crowded with fine scrolling work, so the near-black medallion stands out clearly.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
