The rows of octagonal guls are the place to start describing this lovely rug. Rows of large octagonal guls cross a deep red field, each outlined in navy, with a cream and rust center. A smaller navy motif sits between the rows. The gul, Persian for flower, is the tribal emblem, and the repeat reaches the border on every side, so no corner pieces interrupt it. The red main border carries delicate star-shaped rosettes in rust and navy between narrow lattice guard stripes in navy and soft rose. The short ends close with a band of rose and rust hooks. The border pile sits lower than the field and turns browner in places. It grounds a living room in warm red, and the navy and rose give the repeat a lively beat. At 9'6" by 12'9", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

About Torkaman rugs
For a wedding Turkmen women wove tasseled trappings for the camel that carried the bride from her father’s tent to that of her new husband. Among the Turkmen special carpets are woven for the birth of a child, for weddings, and for prayer and mourning. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs. One octagonal figure repeats across the field with almost no variation. Here a smaller navy figure fills the gaps between the rows of large guls and adds a second beat to the repeat. The red shifts between rust and brick as you cross the room, and the worn borders sit a shade browner than the field.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
