About this rug

The diamond medallion holds a charming steel blue heart. Cream, steel blue and olive stems and blossoms curl over the deep red field, which turns burgundy in places. A diamond medallion on a burgundy ground sits in the middle, holding a tan band inside it and a steel blue heart. Handsome tan spandrels with pale blue scrollwork occupy the corners. The main border has a burgundy ground, carrying a linked scroll of pink and cream blossoms on fine vine. A near-black guard stripe with small pink and cream flowers runs between two cream bands on each side. Much of the field sits low, and white flecks of foundation show among the motifs. The dense drawing holds a room together, the steel blue and tan lightening the red. At 9'10" by 12'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mashhad rugs

Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. The Herat carpets are the classic carpets of Khorasan, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Mashhad is the great weaving city of Khorasan in northeastern Persia, and it specialized in large formats. Its rugs show deep madder red grounds, a single dominant medallion, and borders wide enough to hold their own at scale. This piece has that single medallion, a deep red field and a wide burgundy border, with steel blue and tan lifting the red.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
