About this rug

Red palmette cartouches linked by olive vines give this rug a lovely border. Set within a deep red field, fine vines carry blue, tan and cream palmettes and small flower heads across the open ground. A gorgeous near-black diamond medallion sits at the center, with a tan ring around a pale blue flower and small pendants above and below. Splendid near-black spandrels fill the four corners, each ending in a tan corner piece. The wide main border has a near-black ground, with red palmette cartouches linked by olive vines and small red flowers. Guard stripes in cream, red and pale blue run along both sides of the border. The pile is low in places across the field, and pale specks show in the main border. It suits a room that wants a strong center, and the near-black frame steadies the deep red. At 10' by 13'1", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mashhad rugs

Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. The Herat carpets are the classic carpets of Khorasan, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Mashhad is the great weaving city of Khorasan in northeastern Persia, and it specialized in large formats. Its rugs show deep madder red grounds, a single dominant medallion, and borders wide enough to hold their own at scale. This piece has the single medallion on a deep red ground. Its near-black main border is wide, and the field inside it carries small palmettes and vines.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
