The flowering vines in blue and cream are wonderful on the deep red field. Deep red carries the field, crowded with lovely flowering vines in blue and cream and small touches of orange. A lobed navy medallion sits at the center with pendants reaching up and down the field, and a small rosette at its core, a flower seen from above. Navy corner pieces hold vines and blossoms of their own. The main border is navy too, with a procession of beautiful paisley cartouches in orange, cream and red between cream guard stripes, with a narrow red stripe at the edge. The pile is full, the colors are strong, and every vine is sharp from the center to the edge. It anchors a formal room, and the cream guard stripes lift the dark border so the red stays warm. At 9'11" by 13', it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mashhad rugs
Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. The Herat carpets are the classic carpets of Khorasan, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Mashhad is the great weaving city of Khorasan in northeastern Persia, and it specialized in large formats. This is the room-sized rug that description points to: a deep red ground, a dominant central medallion and a wide navy border that holds its own at scale. The red is dark rather than bright, a madder tone that stays warm beside the navy. What gives this rug its own character is the blue, in vines and leaves running through the red field, with orange touches in the border.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
