About this rug

A charming steel blue star sits at the heart of the round medallion. A deep red field carries small floral sprays and loose blossoms across the open ground. A round medallion in the middle is ringed in navy lobes around a cream band, with a steel blue star at its heart and slender pendants above and below. Handsome steel blue spandrels trimmed in salmon fill the four corners, filled with curling vines and palmettes. Its wide main border is camel, scattered with small red, pink and navy flower heads. Navy bands of tiny flowers and narrow red stripes frame it on both sides. Pile runs low in worn stretches above and around the medallion, and the camel border is worn thin in places. The blue corners cool the dominant red, giving this large rug a warm presence. At 9'5" by 12'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Sabzevar rugs

The Textile Museum in Washington names Sabzevar among the Khorasan cities cited as sources of fine carpets. The Herat carpets are the classic carpets of Khorasan, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Sabzevar lies west of Mashhad in eastern Persia, and its rugs sit between the two eastern traditions. They mix the curvilinear floral drawing of the Khorasan workshops with the plainer geometry of the surrounding villages. This piece gathers its curling vines into the corners and a single large medallion. The palette is warm, with the camel border echoing the small flowers on the red field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
